The Awakening Aten – Blog Tour

I received The Awakening Aten By Aiden K. Morrissey to review, a crime/thriller/mystery novel based in Egypt. You are quickly enveloped in an Egypt of whispers, fears, webs within webs and deceit upon deceit through the eyes of two families.

The Awakening Of Aten

The Awakening Of Aten

The Awakening Aten is full of murder, intrigue, political and rebellious conflict, corruption, tomb robbing war and executions. All set against a background of fundamental ideological change. We discover all this through the eyes of two families, one royal and one a commoner.

Yuya, whose tomb is in the Valley of the Kings, is a foreigner who rises from slavery to become Regent to an infant Pharaoh. This Pharoah is the most powerful man in the world’s wealthiest empire. His children and descendants will remain at the very heart of the country’s destiny.

Kha is a tomb painter and builder who experiences the despair of imprisonment and the horror of war. As overseer of the King’s works, he restores the Great Sphinx and inscribes the ‘Dream Stela’ placed between its paws, still visible today. Through tragic and deathly events his family and that of Yuya become entwined.

This is a fictional tale of real people, whose possessions and artefacts can be seen in museums throughout the worlds. It gives a voice to those people, inspired by their personal items buried with them 3,000 years ago.

Aidan is of Irish heritage and was the first member of his family to be born outside of Ireland. His professional life has caused him to travel the worlds. Now settled in the North East of England he concentrates on writing. A graduate in Law, having worked in a commercial environment, he qualified as a Solicitor in 1981. Aidan’s career developed in an unusual way allowing him to work in various countries including Italy, Brazil, USA, India and Germany.

A holiday in Egypt sparked his passion for Ancient Egypt, specifically the latter part of the 18th dynasty. A history, which Pharoah Horemeb (Djeser-Kheperu-Ra circa 1319-1292 BCE) tried to destroy, only came to light in 1922 with the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb. Aidan has built up a substantial collection of academic books and novels on Ancient Egypt. Learning its customs, traditions and daily life so The Awakening Aten is the culmination of many years of research. He has visited all of the major museums containing artefacts from Egypt throughout the world. As well as spending months in Egypt itself studying the funereal valleys and other sites. All of this supplemented by internet research.

The Awakening Aten is the first in a planned five-book series, looking at the fictional lives of real people through a period of major political and religious change, spanning approximately 130 years.

My Thoughts

I remember first learning about Ancient Egypt in school and like Aidan, it sparked a passion for learning more about Ancient Egypt so I was excited to read The Awakening Aten. Thankfully I wasn’t disappointed! It reads more lke a first party account of events instead of a fiction novel. Aidan’s writing is realistic and leaves you imagining everything so clearly, his depth of research shines throughout the entire book. Knowing The Awakening Aten is the first of five books I genuinely can’t wait to read more. Combining my love of reading and passion for Ancient Egypt, Aidan K.Morrisey has created an entirely unique series I’ll be hunting down for sure!

Do you enjoy historical novels? Do you have a passion for Ancient Egypt too?

One Way Out By A.A. Dhand -Blog Tour

I received One Way Out by A.A. Dhand to review as part of the blog tour. A Harry Virdee crime thriller set in Bradford that I simply couldn’t recommend more! Available from 27th June in Hardback from Bantam Press for £16.99.

One Way Out

A bomb detonates in Bradford City Park. When the alert sounds, DC I Harry Virdee has just enough time to get his son and mother to safety before the bomb blows. But this is merely a stunt.. the worst is yet to come.

One Way Out Front Cover

A new and aggressive nationalist group, the Patriots, hide a second device under one of the city’s one hundred and five mosques. In exchange for the safe release of those at Friday Prayers, the Patriots want custody of the leaders of radical Islamist group Almukhtareen – the chosen ones. The government does not negotiate with terrorists. Even when thousands of lives are at risk.

There is only one way out. But Harry’s wife is in one of those mosques. Left with no choice, Harry must find the Almukhtareen, to offer the Patriots his own deal.

Unputdownable

A.A, Dhand is not an author I had heard of before reviewing this book but as a fan of crime thrillers, I couldn’t wait to give it a go. From the first few pages I was instantly hooked. Dhand delves into the dark side of Bradford, a city divided by racial tensions and where he grew up.

A.A. Dhand

Harry Virdee isn’t your typical cop and has many layers we discover throughout the book, keeping you hooked to learn more. I thoroughly enjoyed One Way Out and will definitely be looking out for more books by A.A Dhand, especially Harry Virdee novels!

A.A. Dhand

Raised in Bradford, A.A. Dhand spent his youth observing the city from the counter of a mall convenience store. After qualifying as a pharmacist, he worked in London and travelled extensively before returning to Bradford to start his own business and begin writing. The history, diversity and darkness of the city have inspired his Harry Virdee novels.

Do you enjoy crime thrillers? Have you read any other A.A. Dhand novels?

The Worry Box Children’s Book Review And Craft

We received The Worry Box to review in time for Empathy Day, a day aimed at reading books to understand one another and to share feelings, thoughts and perspectives highlighting the power and importance of empathy.

The Worry Box Book & Craft

The Worry Box

The Worry Box is a lovely children’s book that encourages children to share their worries to overcome them. Written by Suzanna Chiew and illustrated by Sean Julian, this Little Tiger book is perfect for children aged 3 to 6 years.

The worry box

Mental health is an important topic which thankfully is being discussed more, however, children’s mental health still has a long way to go. Place2Be revealed that 2/3 children worry ‘all the time’. It is important to encourage children to open up and share their feelings, thoughts and worries.

The worry box - empathy day

The Worry Box is perfect for children who may be dealing with anxiety or feeling nervous. Murray bear has lots of worries, his sister invites him to the waterfall but he cant stop worrying! What if the waterfall is too loud?Or what if he’s not very good at climbing? And what if all his friends laugh at him? Milly, Murray’s sister, encourages Murray to make a Worry Box to keep all of his worries in. Can the Worry box really help him?

Murrays Worries`

Creating Our Own Box For Worries

The girls decided after reading the book, that they needed to create their own Worry Box, just like Murray. This is such a lovely simple craft for young children too.

Worry Box Craft

You will need

  • A box
  • Scissors
  • Glue/Sticky Tape
  • Paint/Paper ( We used wrapping paper)
  • Stickers/Labels/Decorations

We taped our box shut and I carefully made a slit along the top for the worry notes to go through. Next, we wrapped our taped box in wrapping paper, ensuring the paper was taped on the sides so the base was flat and the top was clear for cutting the slot. Then I carefully cut through the paper in the same place as the slot for notes. The girls then took over completely adding name labels and stickers! It took us less than 15 minutes to create our own box for worries.

Can you think of any other books for Empathy day?

The Path Keeper Book Tour

I received The Path Keeper by N.J Simmonds, the first book of the Indigo Chronicles to review. A mixture of fantasy and historical romance, I simply couldn’t put this book down!

The Path Keeper Book Cover

This book does come with a mental health trigger warning and contains sexual scenes. These will resonate with older teens (15+) and adults alike.

Mental health & sexual scenes warning.

The Path Keeper

What if our lives were mapped out before birth? Does anyone have the power to change their destiny?

Ella hates London, she misses her old life in Spain and struggles to get over her past. Then she meets Zac. He’s always loved her but isn’t meant to be part of her story., not now or ever. Ella doesn’t realise that Zac’s secret is the one thing that will tear them apart and force her to live in a world that no longer makes sense. A world full of danger, lies and magic. The Path Keeper is a passionate tale of first loves, second chances and the invisible threads that bind us. Can love ever be stronger than fate?

I absolutely loved The Path Keeper and will definitely be looking out for the rest of the Indigo Chronicles. N.J Simmonds writing just flows so well, piecing the story together bit by bit so you just can’t put the book down! Zac and Ella are such interesting characters with so much going on with each of them both in the present and the past. I’m not the greatest fan of romances but this is just so different.

My Thoughts

The Amber Maze draws you in from the start with the mysterious key being found. Bit by bit secrets quickly unravel throughout the story in an enchanting way. I loved the idea of a secret at the heart of The Amber Maze and was pleased the secret wasn’t spoilt until the very end. I had hoped for a slightly different outcome although this may be more due to my preference for thrillers! Overall I did enjoy The Amber Maze, it is definitely a page turn for mystery lovers. I love the colour theme idea behind Christopher Bowden’s novels, especially The Purple Shadow. I will definitely have to
